Coreless Motor Vs Brushless Motor: Which Is Suitable for Your Project?

No matter what your next project entails, if it needs a motor, finding one that is both efficient and economical is crucial. While there are a variety of motors to choose from, the more common motor types are usually coreless or brushless motors. It’s fair to say that one is not really better than the other, but picking the most appropriate one depends on the application you need it for.

Before you choose one over the other, it’s important to understand the difference between a coreless motor and a brushless motor. This post takes an extensive look at the key differences to consider when choosing the best motor for your application. We’ll also highlight the applications that each motor would be better suited to. Keep reading if you need some assistance in choosing the best option for your next application.

Important note: Assun Motor produces coreless brushless DC motors. The intention of this article is to educate our readers on the differences between the 2 motors.

What is a Coreless DC Motor?

A coreless DC motor features brushes and a commutator that functions similarly to a cored DC motor. The essential difference is that the rotor coils are wound in a honeycomb or skewed fashion to form a self-supporting hollow cylinder. The rotors are generally epoxied for stability and the stator is made of rare earth magnets while the brushes are made from precious metal.

How Does a Coreless Motor Work?

For the most part, a coreless motor has a steel core and wires spun around it with a commutator at the other end. It works when this structure rotates inside where stationary magnets are attached which in turn boosts the mechanical strength.

The wire cylinder distributes the magnetic field throughout the structure when an electric current is applied to the leads connected to the bushes and commutator. This novel coil design, in turn, causes the rare earth magnet to produce the power needed to rotate the shaft.

Since these traditional motors have been around for a while, and use a basic function, producing them is extensively cheaper. With faster response times, higher efficiency, and better operation these DC motors are a firm favorite.

Pros and Cons of Coreless DC Motor

Pros

  • Lightweight, compact design
  • High power-to-weight ratio
  • High efficiency in smaller versions (about 90% more)
  • Seamless operation is quiet with low vibration
  • Durability due to less electro-erosion
  • Higher acceleration and deceleration rates
  • Enables high torque
  • Linear speed enables easier control

Cons

  • Can be considerably more expensive
  • No inner iron cores mean the motor can’t handle thermal overloads
  • Requires extra electronics to function
  • Bonding adhesive can lose its bonding characteristics

What is a Brushless Motor?

As the name suggests, brushless motors don’t need a brush to produce the power needed for motor spins. Rather, this motor makes use of permanent sensors situated on the core. An electrical switch on the inside moves the sensor’s front and back by using a solid-state device.

How Does Brushless Motor Work?

As electric motor types, brushless motors use electrical switches instead of mechanical parts, they are more power efficient, offer high torque levels, and emit less noise during operation.

This combination of features makes these brushless motors ideal for use as the standard motors in high-end RC cars. As the most technologically advanced motors currently available, it’s easy to see why, despite their cost, they’re still a preferred choice for applications that require power and efficiency.

Pros and Cons of Brushless Motor

Pros

  • High starting torque
  • Fast starting, stopping, and reversing action
  • Speed control over a large range of voltages
  • The motor boasts a longer life
  • Less heat production in the motor
  • Quiet motor operation

Cons

  • More expensive
  • Lower electrical efficiencies
  • Wearing brushes cause higher maintenance

Coreless Motor Vs Brushless Motor

Many industries prefer the benefits of the durable and seamless operation that modern motor drives offer. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that innovative DC motors are more popular than ever. Not only do these modern marvels boost productivity, but they also make processes in various industries so much easier.

Since both coreless and brushless motors can be used in many applications, they’re more popular than most other motors. Essentially, the key difference between coreless motors and brushless motors is that the rotor windings are wound in a honeycomb shape to create a self-supporting hollow cylinder, which is usually epoxied for stability.

Coreless motors are lightweight, affordable, and don’t operate quietly. A plus point is that they can run on cheap fuel, which makes them an overall cost-effective choice. Brushless motors are considered to offer greater efficiency and are therefore the preferred choice for automation and healthcare applications.

We’ve created a comparative side-by-side view to highlight the differences between these two DC motors.

Summing It Up

It’s clear that both brushless and coreless motors boast a wide range of advantages that make them suitable for a host of different applications. While many people believe that coreless motors are the best solution for just about every application, it depends on the project you need it for.

Keep in mind that essential factors such as cost, and performance will vary between these two options. With that in mind, consider the following.

Choose a coreless motor if:

  • Your application will benefit from better performance
  • Dynamic start-stop operation is what you’re after
  • You prefer the low weight and low noise
  • You need an option that can run on cheap fuel

Choose a brushless motor if:

  • You are looking for a faster response time
  • Greater efficiency is important
  • The application is a motor for a high-end RC car
  • Less noise and high torque are necessary for your application
  • The motor is for computer or printing equipment
  • The higher price tag isn’t a problem
  • Robotic applications require small wheel systems
